Gender and Power

An important theme in Macbeth is the relationship between gender and power, particularly Shakespeare’s exploration of the values that make up the idea of masculinity. What are these values, and how do various characters embody them? How does Shakespeare subvert his characters’ perception of gender roles?

  1. the values are that the man has to be powerful and strong. lady macbeth toys with macbeth by playing with his masculinity.

  2. In Macbeth stereotypes on gender roles are broken by the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is manipulative and greedy and convinces Macbeth to commit murder.

  3. Shakespeare used gender and power in his plays to show what the times were like when he made his plays. The values used to make up the idea of masculinity are shown in the characters of MacBeth. Macbeth is shown as a man who does the work for himself and also listens to Lady MacBeth and does the work for her aswell. This shows his strength and power to do what he wants. Shakespeare used his characters such as King Duncan and Macbeth to show the gender roles of his time.
